Overview

There are various editors available in Linux.

  • ed – A very old editor.
  • vivisual; it is somehow the standard editor on most Linux servers. Even if it is only a link to vim.
  • vim - vi improved; it is an enhanced version of vi. Originally developed for the Amiga (1988 / Bram Moolenaar). Now often installed instead of vi. Vim is fully compatible to vi. Gvim is a gui version of vi.
  • emacs – A very powerful editor. Similar to vi it is not easy to learn but can provide great improvements for the workflow. Xemacs is a gui version of emacs.
  • nano – a popular und simple editor.
